What Is INSOMNIA???..let wikipedia explain..

Insomnia is most frequently defined by an individual's report of sleeping difficulties. The term "Insomnia" are also used in sleep literature to describe a disorder demonstrated by POLYSOMNOGRAPHIC (a sleep study / a multi-parametric test used in the study of sleep and as a diagnostic tool in sleep medicine) evidence of disturbed sleep.Insomnia is always related with two questions :

1. Do You Experience Difficulty Sleeping??
2. Do You Have Difficulty Falling/Staying Asleep??

Types Of Insomnia..
Can be classified as transient, acute, or chronic

a) Transient Insomnia lasts for less than a week.It can be caused by another disorder, by changes in sleeping environment, by the timing of sleep, severe depression or due to stress. Its consequences - sleepiness and impaired psychomotor performance.

b) Acute Insomnia is the inability to consistently sleep well for a period of less than a month.

c) Chronic Insomnia lasts longer than a month It can be caused by another disorder, or it can be a primary disorder. Its effects can vary according to its causes. They might include muscular fatigue, hallucinations, and/or mental fatigue; but people with chronic insomnia often show increased alertness. Some people that live with this disorder see things as if they are happening in slow motion, wherein moving objects seem to blend together. Can cause double vision.

Patterns Of Insomnia..
a) Sleep-onset insomnia is difficulty falling asleep at the beginning of the night, often a symptom of anxiety disorders or the delayed sleep phase disorder.

b) Nocturnal awakenings are characterized by difficulty returning to sleep after awakening in the middle of the night or waking too early in the morning: middle-of-the-night insomnia and terminal insomnia. The former may be a symptom of pain disorders or medical illness; the latter is often a characteristic of clinical depression

Complications Due To Insomnia..

Treatment..
1) Non-pharmalogical
Non-pharmalogical have long lasting improvements to insomnia and recommended as a first line and long term strategy to manage insomnia. The strategies also include attention to sleep hygiene, stimulus control, behavioural interventions, sleep-restricton therapy, paradoxical intention, patient education and relaxation therapy.for acute or chronic insomnia, Hypnotic medication is used and it is only for short term use.

2) Medications
Many insomniacs rely on sleeping tablets and other sedatives to get rest, with research showing that medications are prescribed to over 95% of insomniac cases. The examples of sedatives used is benzodiazepines and newer nonbenzodiazepine drugs. However, benzodiazepines and newer nonbenzodiazepine drugs can also cause physical dependence which manifests in withdrawal symptoms if the drugs is not carefully tapered down. it can also cause day time fatigue, motor vehicle crashes, cognitive impairments and falls and fractures Elderly people are more sensitive to these side effects.
